Market Trends

The Internet has brought increased risks to enterprise networks, and businesses of all sizes are increasingly seeking sophisticated tools to secure their systems. To better meet this demand, next-generation networking equipment is moving towards integrated security capabilities combined in a single device.

According to research firm In-Stat, the worldwide security appliance market is expected to reach $5.3 billion by 2009, with unified threat management (UTM) appliances offering the greatest growth opportunities.  IDC predicts by 2007 that 80 percent of all network security solutions will be delivered via a dedicated appliance, and that new players continue to enter the market due to strong demand for different types of appliances.

Business gateways, the convergence of multiple network services such as advanced security, wireless and VoIP into a single appliance or gateway, are poised for high growth, with In-Stat expecting the market to grow to $1.8 billion by 2009.  Business gateways, which combine common network functions into a single device, result in cost savings, reduced management complexity, and increased reliability.  These products are modular, standards-based devices, offering high-availability, a wide variety of service modules, and integrated system management.  In-Stat notes that as they become more capable, single-function devices such as stand-alone routers and switches will become more marginalized.
